Presumptive: “must be”

In Urdu the emphatic particleہی is sometimes used right at the end of the sentence (after the verbal phrase) to emphasize that verb in the sense that it “must be so.” Most often, ہی is used after the future of ہونا (i.e.ہوگا/گی/گے ……..), especially in the common phrase: “تو ہوگا ہی ”. This expresses the speaker’s belief that something is almost sure to be true. In English the equivalent expression is “must be” in the sense of certainty (not “must” in the sense of obligation). The words  اَوشے or ضرور can be added also to further emphasize the thought.

Examples:

A. آ پ کے پاس میرا ٹیلی فون نمبر تو ہوگا ہی ۔

You must have my telephone number.

B. شیلا پارٹی میں تو ہوگی ہی ۔

Sheila must be at the party.
